Sparkman & Stephens Inc. was formally founded on November 11, 1929, with five partners: Drake Sparkman and his younger brother James, James Murray, and brothers Olin J. Stephens and Roderick Stephens.
The Stephens brothers began their careers as self-taught sailors in Barnstable Bay, Massachusetts. Both have entered the nautical industry at a young age - Olin's apprentice in yacht design with Philip Rhodes, and Roderick who learns shipbuilding at the famous Nevins Yard in City Island, New York, which would later produce several projects of their study .
With the support of his father, twenty-one Olin and his brother have partnered with successful brokers Drake Sparkman.
Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. is established
Their projects have won for decades most of the great international regattas like the America's Cup and a series of victories in Fastnet and Sydney in Sydney Hobart.
S&S designs the design of custom yachts as well as being designers for the shipbuilding of the Nautor, Grand Banks Yachts and Morris Yachts.
Sparkman & Stephens has produced over 2750 drawings in the history of yachting, commercial and military.
Today Sparkman & Stephens is organized in two departments: one focusing on design, naval architecture and marine engineering and the other manages yacht brokerage, chartering and insurance.
Sparkman & Stephens brokers represent over 800 manned yacht yachts in the world, both sailing and motorized, from 55 to 200 feet.
