J/24

International Class - Sailing boat

The J/24 sailing boat is the world's most popular fixed keel monotype designed by Rod Johnstone in 1976.
In the first twenty years more than 5200 hulls have been built. The boat is the first of several models of different sizes built by the shipyard J boats and was born from the prototype "Ragtime" made in the garage of Rod Johnstone.

The series production of the J/24 begins in 1977 and immediately the boat shows winning in the race. The monotype class is present in almost 40 countries with over 100 active fleets.

During the race the J/24 crew is usually composed of a minimum of three and a maximum of five elements, with the rule that the total weight of the crew is less than 400 kg.

The J/24 has a displacement hull, is suitable for racing but has relatively spacious interiors even if Spartans with four berths, fresh water tank and sink that make the boat also suitable for coastal cruising.

The story begins in the summer of 1975 when Rodney Johnstone designs and builds the number 1 hull, Ragtime, in his garage in Stonington, Connecticut. The main mold for the subsequent hulls is made from the prototype. Thanks to the success of the project Johnstone starts the company J-Boat with his brother Bob.
In 1978 the class is popular enough to organize a one-design regatta in Key West with twenty boats at the start.

The international authority for the J/24 class is ISAF, which collaborates with the International J/24 Class Association on all matters related to regulations and interpretations of the rules.

The International J24 Class Association (IJCA) has the world's only authority for conducting and managing the International J/24 Class. The IJCA Statute, the Bylaws and other regulations are binding for all members, and all registered J/24s must comply with the Class Rules and any restrictions imposed by IJCA and ISAF.

The J/24, despite the passage of time is still a very popular boat among keel boats. The boat is simple and robust, does not require excessive maintenance and even dated models can compete with the most recent.
Another reason for its popularity is that it is quite easy to use and inexpensive especially by turning to the second-hand market.
